What is it?
This is a DIY project intended for enthusiast with advanced soldering skills to add NVMe SSD to the A1311 / A1312 iMac (Thick iMac, not slim version). By default Apple shipped this iMac with SATA HDD or SATA SSD, that has a maxed out speed at 500MB/s. This breakout board adapter will allow you to install NVMe SSD to PCIe MXM slot, and you will get a maximum speed of +- 1500MB/s of read & write. This modification doesn't sacrifice any ports functionality, as it requires you activate PCIe Bifurcation from a single x16 to two x8.
Why did you make it?
We built it for fun, this project benefited from our first-for fun project, that is the NevBolt 1, NevBolt 2, X-GPU, Aito6, and Aito7. and we will continue to create it for M1 too.
Other reason to install this to your iMac?
This is a one time modification, that requires advanced soldering skills, but after installation the end user can easily remove/upgrade/reinstall the NVMe SSD himself without soldering in no time.
